Hi! I’m Athena Perez. I’m here to share my journey with CrossFit and fitness, recipes, training tips for the larger-bodied CrossFitter, and I believe that with God’s help, every single one of us has the power to manifest exactly what we desire.
My site is dedicated to providing real advice and effective methods becoming someone who renews from the inside out—by making lifestyle tweaks, letting go and letting God, learning how to set goals, developing manageable daily routines and embracing the journey.
so nice to meet you!

It’s really great to meet ya!
My story began in the beautiful State of Washington; the home of great big evergreen trees, Puget Sound, and the scenic beauty of Mount Rainier. My tumultuous relationship with food began when I was just 5. I am a proud child-abuse survivor, but unfortunately, undesirable habits and patterns were formed in those early and formidable years, and they hopped in my suitcase and traveled with me well into adulthood.

At over 300 pounds I spent most of my twenties trying every diet imaginable, from eating a single can of tuna and green beans per day to starving myself outright. I had no clue how to eat correctly. I was so desperate to lose weight that I probably would have tried cutting it off.

I was a depressed, morbidly obese adult still harboring unresolved pain from my childhood facing new adult challenges; some of which would add exponential amounts of trauma to an already fragile heart. I was raped at 19; at 24, I suffered the loss of my son, and experienced a myriad of other unimaginable events. I hadn’t a clue how to take care of myself, and that manifested in every relationship I had—in love, business, and friendships.

By the time I turned 30, I believed I was doomed to be heavy and unhappy for all eternity, my life nothing more than a constant series of never-ending turmoil. I trusted no one and thought God had forgotten about me. How could he stand idly by and watch terrible things happening to one of his children?

This belief system was cemented until my 38th birthday. I weighed almost 500lbs and was nearly immobile. I knew I was approaching wheelchair confinement because my legs could no longer support my body. I was popping pain pills like candy and suffered from thyroid problems, sleep apnea and acid reflux so bad it would wake me up in the middle of the night. Hemorrhoids, heartburn and blackouts were just a few other symptoms.

Over Christmas 2016, after feeling like I was going to die, I got on my knees and prayed to God to help me. I had nowhere else to go and could easily have downed the bottle of hydrocodone in my kitchen at any moment. But over a period of seven days of prayer and grief, a miracle happened. I believe God answered my prayer and I got to see a glimpse of the life I so desperately wanted. I didn’t know what everything meant, but I followed the only way I knew how.

Fast forward to today. I have lost over 200 lb, I am able to walk without the use of canes, I grew in my relationship with God and self, and am now a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer and educator on making CrossFit more accessible to those who need it the most. With God, therapy and a newfound love for fitness, teaching, and I learned more about myself than you can imagine. I have recommitted my life to help others take that first step. It’s the hardest step of all, but it's possible.
